Food
North Sumatra has a variety of food. Rice is the staple food which is usually eaten with meat, fish, eggs, and vegetables. In some Indonesian restaurants, a variety of dishes are placed on the table in front of you but you only have to pay for what you eat. Traditionally, Indonesians eat with their right hand. Padang food is quite famous for its 'rendang' (meat simmered in spices and coconut milk), and sate (small pieces of meat roasted on a skewer).
Western, meals are provided in all hotels serving foreign tourists. Chinese and Japanese cuisine is also available in some restaurants, even in some small ones. Typical Medan food like 'roti jala', which is eaten with curry, can also be found in restaurants and food stalls.
