TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
All tourists visiting North Sumatra must have valid passports for at least six months from their time of arrival and they must have return tickets to their own or other countries. Visas are required as well, except the people from the following countries:
Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Brunei, Canada, Chili, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, Greece, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Leichtenstein, Luxemburg, Malaysia, Malta, Morocco, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, The Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, The United Kingdom, The United States of America, The United Arab Emirates, Venezuela, and Yugoslavia.
The arrival and departure gates for tourists in North Sumatra are limited to certain places like Medan (Polonia Airport), Belawan, Nibung Bay, Sibolga and other entrances; i.e., Padang (West Sumatra), Batam, Riau, and the Special Territory of Aceh. Foreigners from countries not listed above must contact the Indonesian Ambassador consulate offices in their countries before arriving.
Since 17 August 1992, the Indonesian government has withdrawn the rule saying that an Indonesian must get permission/licence prior to going abroad. The airport tax for passengers is about Rp 15,000.
