PORTS OF ENTRY

North Sumatra has an international airport called "Polonia" in Medan which can handle big planes such as Air Buses, Boeing 737s, Boeing 747s, Boeing 777s, and MD 11s. Direct flights are available from The Netherlands, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. In addition, there are several small airports called "Binaka" on the island of Nias, " Aek Godang" in South Tapanuli, "Pinang Sori" in Central Tapanuli, and "Sibisa" in North Tapanuli that can only handle small planes like Twin Otters and Casas but Binaka airport can handle Fokker 27s. Some plantation companies have small airports for their own needs. There are also some famous harbors in North Sumatra,i.e. Belawan on the east coast and Sibolga on the west coast. Some small harbors are available at Kuala Tanjung, Tanjung Balai, Teluk Nibung, Gunung Sitoli, and Teluk Dalam. There are regular ferries between Belawan and Malaysia (Penang, Langkawi, Port Klang).

You can get to North Sumatra from other places such as Jakarta (by plane and ship), Riau (by plane, ship, and bus), The Special Territory of Aceh (by plane, ship, and bus), West Kalimantan (by plane), and Bali (by plane).

Inter-urban transportation services are quite good. Some urban areas can be reached by planes from Polonia airport such as Gunung Sitoli (Binaka Air port), Padang Sidempuan (Aek Godang Airport), Sibolga (Pinang Son Airport), and Parapat (Sibisa Airport). Trains are available from Medan to Rantau Parapat, Tebing Tinggi, Pematang Siantar, Kisaran, Tanjung Balai, etc.

You, can go almost anywhere at any time by land transportation. Inter-provincial buses serve routes from Medan to Banda Aceh, Padang, Pekan Baru, Jambi, Jakarta. From there you can continue on to Bandung, Jogja, Solo, Semarang, and Bali. There are also many mini-buses bound for tourist areas. Large ferries are used in Lake Toba to carry passengers and even vehicles. Special ferries are available for only passengers as well.
