FLORA AND FAUNA

The flora and fauna (tigers, elephants, bears, deer, antelopes, mouse deer, pigs, civets, orangutans, monkeys, macaques. snakes, monitor lizards, etc.) in North Sumatra are similar to those found on the Asian Continent. They live in the tropical forests in which thousands of different big trees and wild orchids grow rapidly. The government has set aside some areas as nature preserves for flora and fauna, and especially for the rehabilitation of orangutan and other rare species. These are the nature preserves of Sibolangit in Deli Serdang Regency, Tinggi Raja Bukit Barisan in Simalungun, the National Park of Tahura Bukit Barisan in Karo Regency, and the Orangutan Rehabilitation Center at Langkat which is the part of the well-known Leuser Mountain National Park.
