CUSTOMS

The Customs office does not allow you to bring more than 2 liters of alcoholic drinks, 200 cigarettes, 50 cigar, and 100 gram of tobacco. You can only bring in an adequate amount of perfume. Cars, cameras, tape recorders must be reported before entering the country and must be taken back when leaving North Sumatra. The following things are absolutely forbidden: televisions and radio spare parts, narcotics, guns, ammunition, anything in print using Chinese characters, or Chinese medicine. Please ask for permission before bringing in radio transceivers with you. All films and video tapes must be censored by film censor offices. Plants, animals, and fresh fruits should be checked by quarantine officers. Tourists are free to bring in and take out foreign currencies, however, no more than Rp 50,000 (fifty-thousand Rupiah) can be taken out of the country at any one time.
