Barus

Barus is an old town in Central Tapanuli Regency around 50 km from Sibolga. In the past, the first Arabian traders entering this area taught Islam to the people living in Barus.

Here there are a lot of ancient tombs and objects that can still be seen as the remains of the people who occupied this area before. One of the popular tombs is Makam Mahligai (Mahligai Tomb).

The legends and old literature from this place still remain strongly such as the legend of Andam Dewi.

Many people believe that Barus was the place where Islam was first introduced to Indonesia. There are a lot of historical objects supporting this argument. It has attracted researchers of Islamic history in Indonesia.
